Blackout curtains are one of the most popular choices for bedrooms, nurseries, and home cinema rooms. Thick, lined, and often interlined, they do their job beautifully: blocking light, reducing noise, and improving the insulation of any room. But they also weigh considerably more than a standard curtain, and not every curtain pole is built to carry that weight without consequences.
What Happens When a Pole Is Not Up to the Job
A curtain pole that is not strong enough for the curtains it is carrying will begin to show the strain relatively quickly. The most common symptoms are a visible bow or sag at the centre of the pole, brackets that gradually pull away from the wall, and rings that become increasingly difficult to run along the pole as it flexes under the load.
In milder cases, this is an aesthetic problem. In more serious cases, the pole can fail entirely, bringing curtains, fixings, and potentially some of the wall with it. If you have invested in good quality blackout curtains, it makes no sense to support them on a pole that is not built for the task.
What Makes a Pole Strong Enough
The key factors in a curtain pole’s load-bearing capacity are the material it is made from, whether it is solid or hollow, the diameter of the rod, and the number and positioning of the brackets.
Solid wrought iron is one of the strongest materials you can choose for a curtain pole. Unlike hollow aluminium or plastic-coated steel, a solid iron rod does not flex under load. Its weight is part of its strength: the mass of the material resists bending in a way that lighter alternatives simply cannot.

Choosing the Right Diameter for Heavier Curtains
For blackout curtains, particularly over wider windows, we generally recommend a 20mm or 25mm diameter pole. The additional cross-section provides more resistance to bending and gives the brackets more surface area to grip, distributing the load more effectively along the length of the pole.
As a practical guide:
- 12mm poles: Lighter curtains, smaller windows, more delicate proportions
- 16mm poles: Standard to medium-weight curtains across a typical window width
- 20mm poles: Heavier curtains, wider windows, or wherever extra reassurance is wanted
- 25mm poles: Maximum strength for very wide windows, heavy blackout and interlined curtains, or commercial applications

Bracket Number and Placement
The brackets are just as important as the pole itself. A bracket each side is usually sufficient for most windows up to about 150 centimetres wide. For wider windows, particularly those carrying heavy curtains, additional centre brackets help to distribute the load and prevent sag.
